Customer care
What to expect from a handmade piece, how to care for wood, and what happens after you place an order.
Question not covered? Contact us
Will my piece look exactly like the one photographed?
The dimensions, wood species and overall design will match the product description. Certain product descriptions will indicate that the customer will receive the featured product from the photo.
An important consideration about the product photography on this website is the usage of AI to generate backgrounds of the products. Gunridge House values the natural markings and variations in all the inventory. That is a result of working with wood. The company does not alter the appearance of its inventory on the website whenever AI backgrounds are used to showcase environments for the product's display.
A wonderful feature of handmade wood pieces is the grain, colour and natural markings vary from one board to another. Every piece has its own character.
Are Gunridge House products food-safe?
Products intended for food preparation or serving are finished with food-safe materials, as noted on the product page. Always check the individual listing before using a piece with food, since some objects are designed for display or general household use.
How should I clean a wooden board or serving piece?
Wash it by hand with warm water, mild dish soap and a soft sponge. Rinse it promptly, wipe away excess water and let it dry upright so air can circulate around both sides. Never place solid wood in the dishwasher or leave it soaking in a sink.
How often should I condition the wood?
Condition it whenever the surface begins to look pale, dry or rough. Depending on use and the humidity in your home, that may be every few months. Apply a thin layer of Gunridge House Wood Butter to clean, dry wood, allow it to absorb, then buff away the excess with a lint-free cloth.
How can I prevent cracking or warping?
Avoid prolonged water exposure, dishwashers, direct heat and sudden temperature changes. Clean both sides, dry the piece upright and condition every surface, including the edges. Do not store a damp board flat against a counter.
Are knife marks normal?
Yes. A cutting board is designed to be used, and light knife marks will develop naturally over time. Regular conditioning helps keep the fibres nourished. A well-used board can also be lightly refinished when needed; contact us if you would like guidance for your specific piece.
Can I use both sides of my cutting board?
Yes, unless the product description says otherwise. Gunridge House reversible boards are intentionally made without permanent feet so both faces can be used. There are no juice grooves, as crevices to collect liquid inevitably can shorten the life and quality of the wood.
Importantly, always let the board dry fully after washing, before placing it flat on a surface again.
What is Wood Butter made from, and where can I use it?
Gunridge House Wood Butter is made in-house from food-grade white mineral oil, beeswax and lemon extract. Use it to condition suitable wooden boards, utensils and household objects. It can also help protect uncoated metal tools and kitchenware from moisture and rust. Always test a small area first.
Explain a little about where and how your products are made.
Gunridge House products are handcrafted in Montréal, Québec. Wood types primarily used are black walnut, cherry, white oak, maple, mahogany, birch and ambrosia maple, depending on the piece and available material. I hand select all my wood from local suppliers. I am able to re-purpose off-cuts in theme with wood circular economy, and even my own off-cuts make perfect material for spoons and smaller hand carvings.
